In high school, students learn the skills necessary for them to excel in both higher education and beyond, as viable members of the workforce. However, not enough emphasis is placed on the overarching benefit of the basics that a secondary school curriculum focuses on. Countless times, comments such as “how will this benefit me in the future?” are being muttered in classrooms all around the country.   • Pre-Algebra

    Serving as the foundation for the next few years of math, pre-algebra is one of the most important subjects to master. Concepts such as graphing, solving equations, and inequalities are introduced as early as middle school. A deep understanding of pre-algebra can go a long way in helping understand the rest of a student’s math career.

  • Algebra I & II

    Algebra I & II include the most used math concepts in everyday life. Expanding on the material learned in pre-algebra, Algebra I & II dive into the practical uses of math in common applications. Without a good understanding of these concepts, a student can be severely hindered for the rest of his or her career.

  • Geometry

    Geometry is a subject students either love or hate. Usually offered during sophomore year, Geometry serves as a temporary break between Algebra I and Algebra II. Geometry includes understanding logic, proofs, and how to use geometric shapes in analyzing real-world situations.

  • Pre-Calculus

    Pre-Calculus is one of the most disliked subjects offered in the math curriculum. Students typically struggle with abstract concepts such as polar coordinates, conic sections and trigonometry. However, Pre-Calculus serves as a useful link between algebraic concepts and geometric proportions.

  • Trigonometry

    Trigonometry is a widely used concept in the fields of physics and engineering. Understanding the relationship between angles and shapes can be a useful tool when trying to explain the world around us. This is why students are required to learn trigonometry, and most schools emphasize it in their curriculum

  • Calculus

    Calculus typically comes as a relief after struggling through Pre-Calculus. Where the concepts in Pre-Calc can be difficult to understand and conceptualize, Calculus is very applicable in many fields which make it easier to comprehend. Calculus focuses on explaining derivatives and integrals and their interrelationships.

  • Biology

    Biology is the subject most students think about when they think of science. Covering a wide range of topics such as physiology, the theory of evolution, and photosynthesis, it can become a little overwhelming to high school students. At OPT, our holistic approach to biology helps students see the big picture; not just simply read and understand information on a chapter by chapter basis.

  • Chemistry

    Chemistry presents the first quantative and mathematical science in the high school curriculum, usually following biology. Students learn topics such as equilibrium, stoichiometry, and quantum theory. The key to success in chemistry lies in a student’s understanding of the periodic table (and all the information it presents) and their dimensional analysis skills. Like math, chemistry is a hierarchal subject in which strong foundations are necessary in order to be successful in future lessons.

  • Physics

    Physics is one of the hardest sciences to understand. It involves understanding the laws and theories that explain the world around us. Unlike many of its scientific companions, physics requires a deep understanding and very little memorization. This is what makes it a very hard subject for students. At OPT we pride ourselves in showing students how relevant, interesting, and important physics can be.

  • English

    English is the most important course in the high school curriculum. Students learn how to structure essays and interpret important works of literature. This can be a very difficult task with everyday English becoming more informal. At OPT we strive to reinforce the important grammatical and literary subjects that will go a long way in their education and their careers.

  • Spanish

    In an increasingly globalized world, learning a second language will be one of the most important aspects in determining success. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world, and is especially important in a diverse culture such as Miami. With all of the different tenses and conjugates that differ greatly from English, it can be hard for most students to master the grammar of the Spanish language. OPT has specialized tutors who can help make sense of the foreign sounds.

  • AP Physics 1, 2, & C

    AP Physics builds on a lot of the material that is covered in regular physics, however regular physics is not necessarily a requirement. The difficulty in AP Physics B arises from the bulk amount of material that is covered on the AP test. Although challenging, AP Physics C covers less material however involves Calculus in its equations and solutions. Both subjects can be conquered with a little extra help.

  • AP Biology

    AP Biology, unlike regular biology, depends on a student’s big picture understanding of interrelated topics. Students should have the ability to answer questions such as: how do the mechanisms of DNA replication relate to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and why is it important? OPT’s holistic approach to biology directly complements the skills being test by the AP Biology test writers.

  • AP Chemistry

    AP Chemistry touches upon many of the same topics covered in regular chemistry but much more extensively. Additionally, AP Chemistry students must have much better math skills and should be able to apply algebraic and geometric understanding to problem solving. Although initially it may seem daunting, AP Chemistry can be easily conquered with a little extra help and a lot of practice.

  • AP Calculus AB & BC

    AP Calculus is one of the most important courses to take for students entering the STEM fields. All of these fields involve heavy use of Calculus and the topics that are covered on these AP exams. By conquering the AP Calculus exams, students get a jump start on their college education and can dive sooner into their respective careers.
